An independent, privately-owned dental practice that has served Galveston for nearly a century needed a site that reads like the practice feels — warm, careful, deeply considered. We built an editorial apothecary-style site with anatomical illustrations, three board-credentialed providers and a runtime theme studio that lets the family choose how the site looks on launch day.

The challenge
Honor 95 years of independent practice — without looking like the dental site next door.
Most dental websites are interchangeable: stock smiles, generic blue gradients, two-paragraph bios and a chat widget. Magruder needed the opposite. An almost-century of family practice, a board-certified orthodontist who came from El Salvador and graduated valedictorian, three providers with distinct stories and a careful refusal to be the same kind of clinic as the corporate group across the bay. The brief: make a site that looks like a piece of editorial design and reads like a doctor's notebook — without losing the practical work a dental site has to do (services, providers, FAQ, contact, gallery, location).
Our solution
An apothecary-style atlas, wrapped in a real website.
We borrowed the language of 1929 botanical and medical atlases: Roman-numeral plates, italic Cormorant Garamond display, fleuron ornaments, a warm cream paper background, sienna and olive accents, anatomical tooth diagrams and slow animated reveals. Underneath the editorial chrome lives a fast Next.js 15 app with a runtime Theme Studio — Dr. Jeremy and Dr. Sonia can swap palette, typography and hero photography from a side panel without a redeploy, and the change persists. The site stays beautiful and theirs.
Key decisions · 06
Editorial first, clinical never.
// 01
Apothecary visual system
Roman-numeral plates (Plate I, II, III…), italic display headlines, fleuron ornaments, and a paper-cream background with sienna + olive + ochre accents. The grid feels like a 1929 medical atlas, the type feels like a notebook.
// 02
Runtime Theme Studio
A floating sidebar lets the practice owners swap palette (Apothecary / Clinical Atlas), typography (EB Garamond / Playfair / Cormorant / Bodoni) and hero visual without redeploying. Their preference saves to the URL — they share it with anyone.
// 03
Anatomical illustrations
Hand-drawn tooth diagrams as SVG components, integrated into the hero and services pages. Not stock dental clip-art — actual editorial illustrations that reinforce the apothecary feel.
// 04
Provider bios as real biography
Each doctor gets a full page — Plate I/II/III, full bio paragraphs (not three sentences), honors, society memberships, personal notes. Dr. Sonia's path from El Salvador to William S. Kramer Award gets the space it deserves.
// 05
Services grouped by category
Three category covers — Cosmetic (Beautiful Smiles), General (Everyday Care), Orthodontics (Aligned Confidence) — each with its own plate, and individual service pages underneath (whitening, veneers, implants, TMJ therapy, orthodontics, etc.).
// 06
Built for evergreen, not for trends
Editorial design ages better than glossy SaaS dental themes. The site reads as well in 2026 as it will in 2031 — which matches a practice that's been on the same block since 1929.
Inside the practice · 04 plates
Every page, set like a 1929 publication.
The hero is just the front matter. Below it, the rest of the site reads the same way — plates, italic display, Roman numerals, atlas margins. Here are the four that matter most when a new patient is deciding.
// 02Plate II · The Practitioners
Three doctors, one family practice.
Patients see the same dentist consistently — and the site treats each provider as a person, not a stock photo. Dr. Sonia's path from El Salvador to the William S. Kramer Award gets the full page it deserves.
Individual provider page per doctor — Roman numeral plate, full bio paragraphs, honors, society memberships, personal notes.
Board-credentialed badges (AAO, ABO board-certified, ADA, TDA) surfaced without buzzwords.
Italic pull-quote per doctor — captures their voice instead of an HR-style summary.
Portrait frames in the apothecary plate style — works with real photos when ready, looks intentional in the meantime.

// 03Plate IV · What Makes Us Different
Six reasons, one practice.
The hardest part of a dental site isn't features — it's explaining why a 95-year-old independent office is a better choice than the corporate group across the bay. We gave the practice six numbered arguments, each set like an essay page.
Six numbered statements (i.–vi.) on quality, independence, referrals, lab choice, insurance influence, and patient-first decisions.
Each point opens with an editorial kicker, then an italic emphasis word, then plain prose — easy to scan, hard to skim.
Layout reads as a single broadside — ink rules above and below, hairline divisions inside.
Anchorable from the nav (IV. Difference) and from the home flow.

Plate IV
Six reasons, one practice.
What we choose to do — and what we choose not to do — every day, for nearly a century.
i.
Quality over Cost
Impeccable quality, great service.
Zirconia, porcelain and gold for crowns — most last twenty years. The offices that cut corners get ten.
ii.
Independent
A privately owned dental office since 1929.
Dr. Magruder is the owner. Patients see the same dentist consistently — not rotating providers.
iii.
Selective Referrals
We refer when expertise calls for it.
Complex cases go to specialists. Prevents failures that compromise a patient's dental health for life.
iv.
Premium Laboratory
A small private dental lab — by choice.
Higher cost, higher care. Smaller labs deliver the same quality, with attention to every case.
v.
Honest Transparency
On the influence of the insurance industry.
Insurance has pushed competitors to cheap materials and rushed appointments. We don't operate that way.
vi.
Patient-Centered
Decisions made by the Doctor — not management.
Treatment decisions come from the dentist-owner, not corporate management focused on margins.
// 04Plate V · A Catalog of Services
Three categories, thirteen procedures.
Patients arrive looking for one thing: 'do you do my procedure?' The catalog answers that in three plate covers — Cosmetic (Beautiful Smiles), General (Everyday Care), Orthodontics (Aligned Confidence) — with the full procedure list one click away.
Three category covers, each with its own Roman-numeral plate and italic title pair (Beautiful Smiles, Everyday Care, Aligned Confidence).
Thirteen procedures in total — Whitening, Bonding, Veneers, Exams, Periodontal, Fillings, Crowns, Dentures, Extractions, Implants, TMJ, Orthodontics.
Each procedure has a dedicated detail page (intro, sections, lists, callout quotes) — no thin SEO doorway pages.
Orthodontics page is led by the board-certified Dr. Sonia Magruder — credentials embedded in the catalog.
