What Good MVPs Measure
Actual Usage
Do users come back? Daily/weekly active users, session length, feature usage. Vanity metrics like signups don't matter if nobody uses it.
Retention Curves
Cohort analysis showing users coming back week after week. Flat retention curve = product-market fit. Declining curve = fix value prop first.
Willingness to Pay
Do users pay? Not "would you pay?" but actual credit cards charged. Payment is the ultimate validation. Free users lie about value.
User Conversations
Talk to users. What problem were they trying to solve? What almost made them leave? What would make them recommend it? Quotes beat analytics.
Organic Growth
Are users telling others? Net Promoter Score, referral rates, organic signups. Products people love spread. Products they tolerate don't.
Problem Severity
How urgent is the problem you're solving? "Nice to have" problems don't sustain businesses. "Hair on fire" problems do. Test problem severity, not just solution.
MVP Mistakes That Kill Startups
Building Too Much

Instead: Talk to 20-30 users before writing code. Show mockups, get feedback, validate problem severity. Launch to 10 users, iterate, then scale.
Waiting for Perfect
